Self-piercing rivets are formed from steel and stainless steel wire into semitubular shapes. They are then heat-treated and plated. 

Self-piercing rivets emulate the results and quality of spot welding without many of the risks, such as toxic fumes, sparks and noise. And they boast static strengths similar to, or better than, spot welding along with superior fatigue performance.
